Makefile: What does $(@:%.S=.cpp) pass exactly?

I am writing a CMake makefile for one of my C++ projects which makes sure header files are included before including a corresponding source file. The code for this is shown below (important parts shown for clarity):
# Append the directories which contain headers needed to compile
HEADERS = $(shell find -name “*.h”)

# Append the directories which contain the source files which
# should be compiled
SRC = $(shell find -name “*.cpp”)

# Determine which of the above should be compiled

# Build the names of the above given by the @MAKE_NAME@ variable

I have done it in this way to make it easier to add support for new header files. Does this kind of pattern make any sense? It seems to work fine as expected, but I would like to know what is exactly what $(@:%.S=.cpp) is supposed to do. I found a couple of related questions on StackOverflow which do not help to get to the bottom of this. To me it seems like CMake was invented to generate the Makefile from a simple configuration file, so I really think this should not be an issue, but I have no clue how to solve the problem.
