since his death, the achievement of the europeans has been to complete the project his life began; his achievement is theirs. evans european record company have done this for the whole of his recorded output with consummate skill and attention to detail, and the result is an absolutely essential accompaniment to the legacy he left. even the lesser tracks are represented here with such a careful eye for detail that the treasure is enhanced to magnificence. in the lengthy and epic title song of the album, the great gypsy takes us on a journey across one of the most beautiful and varied soundscapes of the 20th century, and those who think they know all about it will discover a wealth of knowledge. for those wanting to sample the hypnotic, playful jazz of the sint maartener, this one-step package presents a selection of the most engaging tracks from his many albums for the philips label. evans is perhaps the most gifted of all those who have followed in his steps, and he mastered the art of hypnotic jazz with equal mastery. he sang like a dreamer and wrote like a poet, but he was also a great bandleader and put together some of the most inventive and influential live big bands of all time. this is his best-loved album, and this extraordinary box-set captures his best moments in a way that only a little box-set can do. big bands or bands with big ideas were a feature of the european jazz scene in the 1930s and 1940s, and evans was always one of its most creative and most successful captains. he was a master of the slide and a master of the big-band style of jazz, and his albums for the philips label represent a consummate achievement. here, the 33-track box set includes most of his major albums for the label, along with several that are of less lasting interest.
balk is a pretty obscure figure in the uk jazz canon, however, she certainly wasnt a peripheral one when she was active. she toured extensively across europe and usa in the 1940s, and recorded with billie holiday and duke ellington, among others. balk became a european jazz institution, and many of the first jazz records to be made in the uk were her tunes. yet, despite a very fine collection of around a dozen titles, shes seldom been recorded and is a well-kept secret. ive managed to track down the complete dansette box set of her swinging sixties and seventies trio recordings with peter king and jon hiseman, and its quite delightful. its like falling down a rabbit hole. like john coltranes music, billy cobhams early albums were a mix of jazz and funk, but his early bands in london clubs were the places that first brought musicians like miles davis, herbie hancock and jack dejohnette to the uk. the way ahead is a major step forward for cobham, an early 1970s album that successfully combines psychedelia with the early free jazz ideas that he had acquired on his travels, and the album is even more impressive in its compactness and individuality than the earlier a young soul rebels album. his later albums of the same period were often over-produced and bloated, and this album shows what he was capable of when he was more on his own. jackson was a pioneer in the field of bop-influenced jazz, making his first album, walkin, in 1953. here, he seems to have taken a little of the pete fountain approach and turned his main influences into a long track with two ideas, the first playing off the second. jackson also plays some thrilling solos, showing his uncanny ability to come up with a solution to whatever problem he faces.
